Knowing what healthy, low calorie snacks to have when you’re trying to eat well can be a struggle for many people. We’ve been conditioned to think that only certain things can be snacks – crisps, chocolate, cereal bars, biscuits…

So if you’re mindful of your health or you have a goal to lose weight, you’re not left with many options.

Think outside the box though, and there are loads of tasty things you can snack on.

We’ve put together a list of our favourite snacks that are convenient to take to work or out with the kids.

Aldi do a really tasty one and 50g is only 47 kcal. With 8.8g protein, 0.3g carbs, 1.2g fat

Aldi’s sweet popcorn is 121 kcal per bag with 1.9g protein, 20.2g carbs, 4.3g fat

Nuts are a great snack but be careful you don’t eat too many as they contain a lot of calories.
20g of mixed peanuts and cashews contains 124 kcal, 5g protein, 2.6g carbs, 10.2g fat

An apple is really nice with peanut butter

One medium apple + 20g peanut butter contains 214 kcal, 6.4g protein, 27.4g carbs, 9.5g fat.

0% Greek yoghurt

Make sure you don’t get Greek style yoghurt as it can be packed with sugar. Look for either Fage Total or the Aldi equivalent.

Turn it into the perfect sweet treat by adding half a scoop of protein powder. Or make it crunchy by adding crumbled rice cakes or popcorn.

Protein shake

If you need something super quick and easy, or you have a bit of a sweet tooth, then a protein shake is perfect

A typical whey shake will contain around 98 kcal, 20.5g protein, 1.5g carbs, 1.7g fat

150g contains 46 kcal, 0.7g protein, 11.2g carbs, 0g fat

Eggs

Whatever way you like… Boiled, scrambled, fried or poached, just remember if you use oil or butter there will be additional calories.

One egg contains 66 kcal, 6.4g protein, 0.1g carbs, 4.6g fat

Snack of the day - eggs

Hummus with carrot sticks is another firm favourite of ours.

50g of hummus with 1 small carrot is 186 kcal, 4.4g protein, 9.2g carbs, 13.4g fat

Protein bar

If you’re craving chocolate and nothing else will do, get a good dose of protein at the same time with a Grenade Carb Killa protein bar.

217 kcals, 23.3g protein, 13.6g carbs, 8.2g fat

Cottage cheese

Tesco’s natural cottage cheese is the nicest one I’ve found, it’s really creamy and not at all watery unlike some of the others I’ve tried.

100g contains 110 kcals, 9.2g protein, 4.6g carbs, 6.1g fat
